Feb. 12 Sled trip update....

Below is an email we recieved from Camille from New York, USA whom Jen and I sledded with on Feb 12, 2006. The photos that follow where taken by Camille:

"Hope you guys are doing well there in Revelstoke? I am settled in and back to reality here in New York since my trip! I wanted to let you guys know how much fun I had that day with both of you and Mr. Mark Shaede. It was very exhilarating and needless to say breathtaking. I just went onto your Website and saw the wonderful story Kevan wrote about the trip we took that day. I also added my comments at the bottom of the page as well.

Below are some photos I had taken of you guys and the scenery during our trip with Mark. The first few are of you guys & Mark before we left. The rest are whiling we are traveling up to the lodge, at the lodge and then the top. Take notice of the last photo....if you look close you can see Jen walking down the hill after she flipped her mobile over. I remember her saying..."I'm going to walk down now". Then Mark made her come back up and ride down herself."

This is where we started our sledding trip and is the west entrance to Boulder Mountain. It is located on the Trans Canada Highway #1 about 5 KM from the city of Revelstoke. In the Background you can see the Great White North Bar and Grill.

This is Mark Shaede the owner of Revelstoke Snowmobile Tours clowning around. We rented the sleds from Mark and he was also our guide.

And more trees... But wait... That is not a tree but Jen walking down the mountain from her rolled over sled! You can not see me but I am behind her sled trying to roll it over. I realized that she is walking down the hill and has the sled kill key! I can not get the sled down with out it and besides if I ride her sled down how will I get mine down?

I said "Get the f*ck back up here honey!". Jen replied "F*ck you I am not doing this anymore!" after her fourth roll over....

Luckily Mark saved the day by convincing Jen to get back on the sled and ride it down! That she did and all was happy except Jen gave Mark a piece of mind cause he took her down a tree run called Shady lane.....

Good times at the Great White North

Biggest Sled Truck I have seen!

This the Wilford family from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They stayed at the Monashee Lodge in Revelstoke for a week of sledding and skiing. They drove this big semi truck into Revelstoke from Saskatoon and parked it at the Monashee Lodge. Their truck had 7 sleds and a big gas tank for extra fuel. This is the biggest sled truck/trailer I have seen.

Ice Climbing At Revelstoke

Marian and Dave came to Revelstoke to do some ice climbing. During their adventure they stayed at the Monashee Lodge in Revelstoke. This is the middle of winter and they arrived with a canoe. I thought that was strange as most visitors come to the Monashee Lodge in winter with sleds and not a canoe.

This is Marian posing by their canoe after paddling across the Illecillewaet River to get to the trails that lead to the ice structures. Now you know why they came to the Monashee Lodge with a canoe. The Illecillewaet River is located on the SW side of Revelstoke and flows into the Columbia River.

Marian and Dave have started their hike up to the ice structure you can see in the back ground.

In the above two photos you can see Dave climbling first. He climbs the ice free style and sets in a rope for Marian to use on her climb. The rope also acts as a safety line for Dave in case he slips and will prevent him from falling to far down. It looks dangerous to me but I am sure they are using all known safety precautions.

Jen's 1st time sledding

On Sunday February 12, 2006 Jen and I (Kevan) finally went sledding together. It was Jen's 1st time sledding and my second time. Mark Shaede our tour guide from Revelstoke Snowmobile Tours took us and other guests up Boulder Mountain. Mark is an excellent guide for both novice and expert riders. He can take you to hidden areas that no one else can find. He has taught both Jen and I how to sled in the mountains.
Thanks to Mark we both had a blast and it was the most fun I have ever had. On this trip I did not get stuck once or roll over unlike my first trip. Jen rolled over a couple of times but then this was her first time and she just has to learn to stand up in the rough stuff and throw your weight around. I was proud of the way Jen made out on her first trip sledding in the mountains. I am hooked!

This photo gives you an indication of the snow quality on top of Boulder Mountain. I would say it was like sledding on a pillow. All the rocks, ravines and trees are covered with over 15 feet of snow. We did not have fresh powder when we went but there was still lots of untracked powder. Even though the powder was over a week old is was still fluffy as it has remained below freezing.

This is a photo of me in the bottom left beside Camilla from New York. This was her first time sledding in this area and she also had a blast. The 3 guys in the background sled in Revelstoke every chance they get. I did not sled with them as I do not have enough experience for the more challenging stuff.

This is Jen, Mark and Camilla hamming it up on the top of Boulder Mountain. Words can not describe what it is like up there. I know understand why some people come to Revelstoke for sledding every chance they get. They live for sunshine and powder but living here we can just go out on the sunny days!

The Monashee Lodge in Revelstoke, BC get a lot of sledders as guests. Some sledders come here almost ever week-end. Thier goal is to sled when there is lots of powder but it is not good if you can not see anything. We have had an unusual winter so far where it is been overcast and not much in the way of sunshine. Finally around February 5th we have had over 5 solid days of sunshine.

I decided to take some photo's around Revelstoke to prove that we indeed did experience sunshine. This is an interesting sign that points to all the nearby mountains and lists their elevations. Click on any photo to get a bigger version of the photo.

This is Boulder Mountain and Frisby Ridge.

This is the train bridge over the Columbia River which is beside the Trans Canada Highway bridge which is the entrance to Revelstoke. In the background is Mt. Begie which has a permanent glacier. For you hikers here is a link to the Mt. Begbie summit trail.

Meka is the Monashee Lodge mascott. Guests at the Monashee Lodge like a shot of tequila after a hard day of sledding in the mountains around Revelstoke. Cuervo is the favourate brand of tequila that is consumed at the Monashee Lodge.

Big Iron Shoot-Out March 10-12, 2006

Ozoned at the Monashee Lodge

When Ozone Dave comes to Revelstoke for some sledding and stays at the Monashee Lodge then anything can happen.

Ozone Dave is the organizer for the Big Iron Shoot-Out which is a sled hill climb event taking place at Boulder Mountain on March 10-12, 2006.

He will stop at nothing to promote this event.

So be warned whether you stay at the Monashee Lodge or not and Ozone Dave sees you then you will get Ozoned!

Ozone Dave will make you poze for some crazy photos. You can see Jen in this photo with some Monashee guests and some innocent by-standers that happened to be walking by the Monashee Lodge parking lot.

These three girls just happened to be walking by the Monashee Lodge parking lot and they got Ozoned by Ozone Dave....

New Monashee Lodge Mascot!

This is Meka and she is the new Monashee Lodge mascot. She is about 10 weeks old in this photo and is a cross between a Bichon Frise and a Shih Tzu. This mixed breed is commonly known as a Zuchon (Shichon). We picked her up from a breeder in Salmon Arm, BC.

You can see she is adorable and looks like a stuffed teddy bear or an ewok from Star Wars. She loves to help out on the front desk.

This photo was taken a couple of days after we got her. You can see she has grown a lot compared to the above photo.

This is Meka going for a walk in the snow at the ski hill on Mt. MacKenzie. She is a real trooper and not afraid of the snow and cold.

Our friends Jason and Tasha the owners of The Great White North Bar and Grill in Revelstoke fell in love with Meka. But then who wouldn't!

Mt. MacKenzie Ski Hill

The ski hill at Mt. MacKenzie is now open for skiing and boarding. It was a little bit foggy today but there is more than enough snow for some fun. The ski hill is presently called Powder Springs. Development has begun to dramatically expand the ski hill and will be called Mt. MacKenzie Resort.

The plan calls for a modern all-season resort with more than 16,000 bed units, guest service facilities, an 18-hole golf course and a multi-use trail system. The proposed controlled recreation area is 2,600 hectares (6,400 acres), boasting 2,000 hectares of ski-able terrain and a vertical drop of 1,845 metres (6,100 feet), with 25 lifts and 100 ski and snowboard trails. It will have the longest vertical drop of any ski resort in North America and the fourth longest vertical drop of any ski resort in the world.

Home of the Ozone Guy

The Monashee Lodge is known as the home away from home for the Ozone Guy when he is sledding in Revelstoke. He is locally know as Ozone Dave! Ozone Dave is the organizor for the annual Big Iron Shoot-Out which takes place on March 10-12, 2oo6 in Revelstoke.

The Big Iron Shoot-Out 2006 is expected to attract over 3,000 sledders and is a hill climb event that takes place on Boulder Mountain.

The Monashee Lodge is completely booked for this event. If you have not booked a room for this event in Revelstoke then you better book ASAP. Wether you are a hard core sledder, amateur sledder or simply a spectator you do not want to miss the Big Iron Shoot-Out 2006. Links to the motels in Revelstoke can be found here.

1st Snow in Revelstoke 2005-12-05

This is our first dump of snow at the Monashee Lodge on December 5, 2005. Not a big dump but none the less it is very pretty.

This photo was taken on December 5th, 2005 and it is the main parking lot for the Boulder Mountain Area. Sledders are already parking on the bottom of the mountain.

I happened to be driving past this train bridge and a train was comming. It is a bridger over the Columbia River and the bridge in the background is the #1 highway.

Flatlanders! 2005/12/04

Here are Elmer and the boys from Biggar, Saskatchewan relaxing in the hot tub in the lobby of the Monashee Lodge. We call them "Flatlanders" here in Revelstoke. Biggar is 962km east of Revelstoke. They are regular guests at the Monashee Lodge.

Here are Elmer and the boys relaxing after a day of hard sledding. Enyoying them selves and notice the dead soldier in the hot tub! They talked me into joining them but I will not post those photo's.

1st Time Sledding.......

On Saturday, December 3, 2005 Mark Shaede from Revelstoke Snomobile Tours took me and a bunch of other guests sledding on Boulder Mountain. It was unlike anything I have done before. Sledding in the mountains is hard work. I was overdressed cause I did not know before hand it would be so physical. It was quite a workout and now I understand why sledders enjoy the hot tub after a day of sledding.

Yes I got stuck a number of times including rolling the sled once. Luckly there was no damage to me or my sled except a bruised ego.

Mark is an excellent tour guide for both rookies like myself and experienced riders. The terrain up there is so vast up there that if you are new to the area then having an experienced guide is a must.

I have no photo's to post but I am looking forward to going out again.
